Artika Resources focuses on mineral resource acquisition. It also focuses on the operation of mining and beneficiation plants. Our main area of interest is the extraction of valuable minerals from ores. These are used to produce key elements and metals.

Our primary focus is on both greenfield and brownfield operations. We invest in resource operations where we identify where we can add value. We achieve this by jointly and/or exclusively managing the operation.

What Does Beneficiation Mean in the Mining Industry?

Beneficiation within the mining industry is the process that improves the economic value of the ore. We achieve this by removing the gangue minerals. The result is a higher-grade product (ore concentrate), and a waste stream (tailings).

Artika Resources operates a manganese mineral asset situated in the North-West Province of South Africa. Manganese reserves are estimated to have 15 million tonnes of manganese ore chips.

The mine is an opencast mine. Open cast mining operates through a load and haul mining technique. The manganese deposit has the presence of diamonds and produces 45% high-grade manganese ore.

Mining of Manganese in South Africa

  1. South Africa Produces the Most Manganese in the World.

In 2019, South Africa was the biggest exporter and producer of manganese across the globe. South Africa is the world’s largest producer of manganese. It accounts for 33.5% of annual manganese production across the globe.

The annual production of manganese is 6.2 million tonnes. Most South African manganese reserves are found in the Kalahari Desert. The manganese content found in the Kalahari accounts for more than 70% of the world’s manganese reserves.

  1. Manganese Markets

Manganese is the fourth most used metal on earth in terms of tonnage, behind iron, aluminium, and copper. It has numerous applications, including objects made of steel, portable batteries, or aluminium beverage cans. In each case, manganese plays a vital role in improving the properties of the alloys and compounds involved in each specific application.

While demand trends for manganese in steel continues to see higher intensity of use in China, following the implementation of stricter rebar standards, a surge in demand has not materialised as many steel mills were already compliant to the standards and smaller mills were given a tolerance period to adhere to the new regulations. The demand for manganese is overwhelmingly driven by steel output, accounting for well over 90% of global manganese consumption.

Though steel will continue to dominate manganese demand, consumption of manganese in batteries is expected to grow rapidly over the next decade. Manganese sulphate demand from lithium-ion batteries is expected to double over the next decade as EV market penetration ramps up and will have significant impacts on the manganese metal supply chain.

  1. Top Uses for Manganese in the World

When used in safe formulas, manganese is irreplaceable. There are many diverse types of manganese products. This metal plays a vital role in our everyday lives. It is obvious how vital mining of manganese is when you consider its uses.

  1. Manganese adds pliability and strength to steel.
  2. It depolarises ferromagnetic alloys.
  3. Manganese is used to de-colourise glass products made green by iron impurities.
  4. We use manganese to depolarise dry cell batteries.
  5. Manganese is a powerful oxidising agent.
  6. We use manganese to make fertilizers. It is also used for some grazing animals.
  7. Many of us take multivitamins, of which Manganese is one of the components. Consuming certain levels of manganese supplements per day should form part of our essential nutrient intake.
  8. Manganese is often part of the formula given to formula-fed infants. It aides bone formation and bone mineral density.

Manganese is the fourth most used metal in the world after iron, aluminium, and copper. We measure this by tonnage. It is the twelfth most abundant element found in the Earth’s crust. With such prolific global demand, the industry has seen significant growth. South African manganese fields produce many tonnes of manganese. We are one of the biggest exporters in the world.
